Eclipse Award winner Echo Zulu, who suffered two fractures in her left front leg, had surgery that “went as well as could be expected,” according to what one member of filly’s ownership group told Thoroughbred Daily News on Saturday.

“She’s out of surgery. Out of recovery,” Winchell Thoroughbreds racing manager David Fiske told TDN. “Prognosis guarded. A lot depends on sufficient blood supply to the surgery site.”

Echo Zulu broke two sesamoids in a workout Friday at Santa Anita, where she was being prepared for the Breeders’ Cup next month. Her surgery was done by Dr. Ryan Carpenter at the track’s equine hospital, according to TDN.

A 4-year-old filly by Gun Runner, Echo Zulu is owned by L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds. Trained through her whole career by Steve Asmussen, she was the 2021 champion 2-year-old filly.

Echo Zulu is a three-time Grade 1 winner, most recently victorious in the Aug. 26 running of the Ballerina Handicap (G1) at Saratoga. Her career record is 11: 9-1-0 with earnings of $2,640,375, according to Equibase.
