Jerome Stakes winner Drum Roll Please was injured in a Friday morning workout on the Belmont Park training track and is off the Triple Crown trail, his owner told Daily Racing Form.

The Hard Spun colt trained by Brad Cox suffered a fracture to his apical medial sesamoid in his left hind ankle, owner Al Gold told DRF’s David Grening. It happened during a 49.55-second, half-mile breeze in company with a stablemate.

Gold said he expected Drum Roll Please, a $250,000 yearling purchase who also finished third last fall in the Grade 2 Remsen, may be back this summer after three months to recover from surgery and three months to train back into racing shape.

With next month’s Withers (G3) at Aqueduct on the horizon, Drum Roll Please was 40-1 on the morning line for the ongoing third pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. His name was removed from the 40 betting options after DRF broke the news of his injury. Wagers made on him since the pool opened Friday at noon EST were refunded.

Drum Roll Please also was 100-1 at Circa Sports and 90-1 at Caesars Sportsbook in Nevada fixed-odds futures betting for the Derby.
