Report: Does Appleby have a Derby contender after Tuesday win?
Charlie Appleby is eyeing Kentucky Derby 2026 as a potential long-term target for Al Zanati after the Godolphin 2-year-old's victory Tuesday in the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon at Chantilly, according to a report by At The Races.
"It's good to have big ambitions, let's see how far we get," Appleby told Sky Sports Racing when asked if the Kentucky Derby could be on the radar for Al Zanati.
The Dubawi colt won the race by a head under William Buick on synthetic. The victory came after Al Zanati finished second in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket.
Dubai appears the more immediate destination for Al Zanati, whose dam Divine Image won the UAE Oaks (G3). Appleby said he'd prefer to see the colt gain experience in Dubai before considering any Kentucky Derby plans, though he left open the option of giving Al Zanati time off until spring.
The trainer described Al Zanati as a work in progress who shows significant ability but needs mental maturity to match his physical talent.
"I think that's just immaturity showing through at the moment, there's definitely a lot more to come."
