Report: Champion Shamrock Rose may retire due to injury
Shamrock Rose emerged from her April 19 workout at Keeneland an injury that could lead to the champion filly's retirement, trainer Mark Casse on Sunday told the Daily Racing Form's Bryon King.
“I don’t know whether she is going to run anymore or not,” Casse said, with Shamrock Rose, a 4-year-old by First Dude having already undergone surgery on her ankle. “She’s done so much. She could come back, but by the time she comes back, we’re talking about fall and everything.”
Shamrock Rose was pointing to the Humana Distaff (G1) on Saturday's Kentucky Derby undercard. Over the same track last fall, she struck at 25-1 to win the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, then took the Eclipse Award for top female sprinter.
Shamrock Rose is winless in three starts this season. She most recently finished fifth in Keeneland's April 6 Madison Stakes (G1).
Per DRF, Shamrock Rose's ownership, Conrad Farms, have no plans to breed the filly but are instead expect to sell her. In the meantime, she's reported to be "happy and healthy," with a decision looming on her future on the racetrack.
