Report: Champion Havre de Grace dies after producing colt
Havre de Grace, the 2011 horse of the year, died Sunday at age 16 after producing a colt by Into Mischief, Thoroughbred Daily News reported.
The winner of six graded stakes hemorraghed multiple times after producing the colt Friday afternoon, leading to her death early Sunday, according to the report.
“She was just so smart, she fought all the way to the end, so full of grace, like her name says,” Pope told TDN. “She was stoic right to the end."
Havre de Grace compiled a career record of 16: 9-4-2 for Fox Hall Farms and earnings of $2,586,175.
She was named horse of the year and champion older mare after her 2011 campaign, when she won the Azeri (G3), Apple Blossom (G1), Obeah (G3), Woodward (G1) and Beldame Invitational (G1). She finished the year in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs, finishing fourth.
Havre de Grace raced once in 2012, winning the New Orleans Ladies Stakes before being retired.
In November 2012, Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm bought her for $10 million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall sale.
She has produced eight foals, according to the TDN report. Her most successful is Graceful Princess, by Tapit, who won the 2021 Molly Pitcher Stakes (G3).
The foal born Friday has accepted a nurse mare, TDN reported.
