Report: British training legend Stoute will retire at year end

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of six Epsom Derby winners, will retire at the end of the year.

Racing Post reported that Stoute, 78, announced his retirement to a British news agency.

Among his many accomplishments are eight wins in the Breeders' Cup, with Pilsudski in the 1996 Turf, Kalanisi in the 2000 Turf, Islington in the 2003 Filly & Mare Turf, Conduit in the 2008 and 2009 Turf, Dank in the 2013 Filly & Mare Turf, Expert Eye in the 2018 Mile and Queen’s Trust in the 2016 Filly & Mare Turf.

Stoute was champion trainer in the United Kingdom 10 times, according to the report. His champion horses included Shergar, Shareef Dancer, Zilzal, Harbinger and Workforce.

He has won 16 British Classics, most recently the 2022 Derby with Desert Crown, and 13 in Ireland, according to the report. He saddled his first winner in 1972.

Stoute was knighted in 1998 for services to tourism in his native Barbados, according to the report, and he was inducted into the the U.K.'s Hall of Fame last year.
