Two leading mares in Bob Baffert's barn have been retired.
Daily Racing Form reported Sunday that As Time Goes By and Merneith, both 5-year-olds, were retired to become broodmares.
As Time Goes By's retirement follows her first Grade 1 win in the Beholder on March 5. The daughter of American Pharoah has a career record of 14: 7-3-1 and earnings of $955,600.
Baffert told DRF that she could have continued racing but that the Grade 1 win made her a much more valuable broodmare.
Merneith, also sired by American Pharoah, won the Santa Monica Stakes (G2) this year and last year. Her career record is 12: 5-4-2, with earnings of $493,620.
