Report: Abel Cedillo injury will not require surgery
Jockey Abel Cedillo fractured a bone in his neck in a spill at Del Mar on Sunday, but he will not require surgery.
Cedillo remains in a hospital and will need four to six weeks of physical therapy, according to a report by Steve Andersen of Daily Racing Form.
The spill occurred near the start of the fourth race at Del Mar when Cedillo was riding Get the Gold. The 3-year-old colt clipped heels when he was knocked into an inner rival, according to the Equibase chart. Cedillo was unseated, and Get the Gold got up quickly and walked off.
Cedillo told DRF that he has "a little pain."
After the fall, Cedillo remained on the track until members of the gate crew carried him into the winner's circle, according to the report. If he had not been moved, the race would have been canceled.
“I think it was a mistake,” Cedillo told DRF. “They shouldn’t have touched me. They should have stopped the race.”
Ambulance drivers put a neck brace on Cedillo, placed him on a stretcher and took him to a hospital, according to the report.
Cedillo has a record of 203: 25-27-18 this year and earnings of $1,231,784.
