One More Bid, winner of the Grade 2 Mathis Mile a year ago, died suddenly Thursday, co-owners of the gelding confirmed in social-media posts.

“We bid a heartfelt farewell to our beloved One More Bid,” California Racing Partners said on X, formerly Twitter. “His spirit, grace and unforgettable presence will forever gallop in our memories.”

Daily Racing Form's Steve Andersen first reported the death of the 4-year-old son of California Chrome. BloodHorse reported the fatality occurred during training at Santa Anita on Thursday and said that a necropsy to find a cause of death was pending.

One More Bid compiled a career record of 10: 2-4-1 and earnings of $262,540. His two wins included the 2022 Mathis Mile in his first start against stakes company, when he nosed out Balnikhov for trainer Ryan Hanson and owners California Racing Partners, Ciaglia Racing and Hanson.

He was last seen in the afternoon checking in fifth in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28, beaten by 2 1/2 lengths by winner Atone. He had resumed training at Santa Anita and recorded a single timed workout on Nov. 17, covering three furlongs in 36.6 seconds, according to Equibase data.

In a tribute posted on Instagram, California Racing Partners wrote that One More Bid “wasn’t just a remarkable athlete on the track, but a source of joy and inspiration to everyone around him. His playful spirit around the barn will be profoundly missed.”

One More Bid was purchased for $55,000 by Matthew Dohman at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton 2-year-olds-in-training sale out of a consignment from Pike Racing.
