Report: 1/ST Racing plans to expand Pegasus to Santa Anita
Starting in 2024, there could be Pegasus races at both Gulfstream and Santa Anita.
1/ST Racing plans to host two Pegasus days in 2024, according to an Associated Press report. 1/ST Racing owns Gulfstream and Santa Anita, as well as Pimlico, Laurel Park and Golden Gate Fields. The Pegasus-branded races at Santa Anita are expected to include both dirt and turf races. But company officials have not stated final details, including how the races at Santa Anita would fit into the racing calendar.
"I'd really love to see that we bring it to the West Coast," 1/ST Racing president and CEO Belinda Stronach told Associated Press. "That will probably happen in 2024."
Stronach made it clear that Gulfstream would remain home to the Pegasus World Cup. "Pegasus has a home here in Miami. We can’t move Pegasus from Miami. We have great partners here, and it’s more than just a day now. We have deep roots here in Miami."
This follows the unveiling of the 1/ST Racing Tour, an effort by the company to coordinate fan events, betting offerings, television coverage and trainer and owner awards across major race days at the tracks it owns.
The 2023 Pegasus World Cup card was the first of those designated race days, which continue Saturday with the Holy Bull (G3) card at Gulfstream and the Robert B. Lewis (G3) card at Santa Anita. The series continues through traditionally major race days at Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park through the winter and spring, as well as Preakness day and Black-Eyed Susan day at Pimlico.
