Remington Park backstretch opens Monday morning
Remington Park opened the stable area to horses Monday morning in anticipation for the start of the 2022 thoroughbred season. Trainer Boyd Caster extended his streak of being the early bird, arriving first with horses just after midnight local time.
Caster, a resident of Jones, Okla., attempted to beat the heat with his athletes, moving in during the coolest part of the early morning at 1:08 a.m. EDT. He brought 16 horses with him for the first delivery to his barn, then returned at 5:30 a.m. EDT with eight more before finishing with another trio in an attempt to beat the heat wave currently testing Oklahoma.
“It was 82 degrees when we unloaded the first group right after midnight,” Caster noted. “They were stabled at Will Rogers Downs and we moved at night so they wouldn’t be traveling in a hot trailer with the sun beating down. All of them handled the move and they were frisky this morning.”
Temperatures have been above 100 degrees for the past few days throughout Oklahoma and are expected to rise close to 110 degrees later this week.
This is the third consecutive year that Caster has been first in with his thoroughbreds. He doesn’t plan to waste any time getting some of them to the track as training will begin on Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. EDT.
The Remington Park thoroughbred season starts Friday, Aug. 19 and continues through Saturday, Dec. 17.
