Two major figures in Thoroughbred racing have died in February at their homes in Rancho Santa Fe.
Betty L. Mabee, a philanthropist who with her husband, John, built one of California’s leading Thoroughbred breeding farms in the hills of Ramona, died Monday after an extended illness, according to her only child, Larry. She was 88.
And Mary Elizabeth Florsheim Bradley, who was the owner of several major stakes winners in the 1970s and ’80s along with trainer Charlie Whittingham and jockey Bill Shoemaker, died of natural causes at her Rancho Santa Fe home on Feb. 5 at the age of 90.
