My best guess is that Joe Talamo, who will ride Sidney's Candy in the
Kentucky Derby, never heard of Willie "Smokey" Saunders. Talamo is 20
years old and has never ridden in the Derby, and 75 years ago Saunders
was the same age, sans Derby experience, when he and Omaha won in
Louisville on their way to a sweep of the triple crown. They were
mostly spelling the name of the series in lower case then.
