The 2019 Eclipse Award winners were announced Thursday night. While many of the awards went to horses universally accepted as the leaders of their respective divisions, as always, there were disagreements. One HRN reader is fed up with the awards being tilted in favor of Breeders' Cup race winners, while another lamented that undefeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Structor was wrongly overlooked by the voters.
Mucho Gusto, winner of the Pegasus World Cup, led this HRN reader to show some appreciation for what the Bob Baffert trainee did leading into the $3 million race at Gulfstream Park. He also offered a message for detractors of the Hall of Fame trainer who has won two of four editions of the Pegasus.
While Omaha Beach is off to Kentucky for stud duties after being scratched from the Pegasus World Cup, not all are buying that he's guaranteed success in the breeding shed. A number of readers took exception to such comments in a Spendthrift Farm announcement that Omaha Beach is arriving Monday.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is cautiously planning Ancient Warrior's 2020 campaign, and HRN reader Bill Dawson has repeatedly argued that this could be one of the crop's best sons of Constitution. And keep in mind there are already quite a few
2020 Kentucky Derby contenders by that sire. A debut winner at Del Mar, Ancient Warrior is expected early next month in an allowance event at Oaklawn Park.
