Multiple Grade 1 winner Raging Torrent has been retired to stud at Lane’s End Farm in Central Kentucky.
Trained by Doug O'Neill, the son of Maximus Mischief developed swelling behind his left front knee after winning the Met Mile (G1) on June 7. He was rested and evaluated as his connections decided whether he would resume racing or go to stud.
The 4-year-old colt retires from racing with seven wins and earnings of almost $1.8 million with four triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures from Daily Racing Form, including an impressive win on the international stage in the Godolphin Mile (G2) at Meydan.
Bred by Rodney J. Winkler and Alfonso Mazetti, Raging Torrent won at first asking in his 2-year-old debut at Del Mar with a troubled trip, including the jockey losing his crop in the stretch, but still drew off by over two lengths. He went on to be graded-stakes-placed at 2.
As a 3-year-old, he impressed in an allowance win at Churchill Downs, where he dominated the field with an 8 1/4-length victory. This began a streak where he won six of his next seven starts.  During that span, Raging Torrent won his first stakes in the Maxfield at Churchill Downs and won his graded-stakes debut in the Pat O’Brien (G2) at Del Mar against older horses with a 104 Beyer. He capped his 3-year-old season with his first Grade 1 victory in the Malibu at Santa Anita, defeating Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.
An international field in the Godolphin Mile (G2) set the stage for Raging Torrent’s 4-year-old campaign for new owners Yuesheng Zhang and Craig Dado. He was never in doubt, jumping out to an early lead and drawing away for an easy 3 1/2-length victory. Returning to the U.S., he led the entire way yet again in his Met Mile victory, making easy work of a field that included champion 2-year-old Fierceness and Breeder’s Cup Classic winner White Abarrio with a career-best 106 Beyer.
“We’ve had a history of success with Malibu winners standing at Lane’s End with the likes of City of Light, Twirling Candy, and The Factor, which played a big role in bringing Raging Torrent here,” said Lane’s End’s Bill Farish. “His ability to stretch his front-running speed to a mile and win a prestigious race like the Met, in addition to his international success, makes him an exciting prospect for breeders.”
He will be available for inspection beginning with the start of the Keeneland September yearling sale.
