Racing at Santa Anita with Marc Doche: Sanagas hopes to end ...

The unprecedented path to Australia’s biggest race begins today for Sanagas, as the six-year-old German-bred son of Lomitas begins his 2012 campaign in the $150,000 San Marcos Stakes (Grade II) with the end goal the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup (Group 1) on November 6th at Flemington Racecourse.
After beginning his career with four wins in five races in Germany, Sanagas won 3-of-5 last year for trainer Graham Motion, culminating his 2011 schedule by visiting California for the first time to romp home by 3 ¼-lenths in the Hollywood Turf Cup (Grade I) over 1 ½-miles on November 19.
Purchased privately since that win, Sanagas now calls Peter Miller’s barn home and is the 8-to-5 favorite today over 1 ¼-mles for a trainer who is not known for his proficiency with long-distance turf runners.
Back on his preferred course for the first time since suffering his first defeat in six tries over it when he missed by a nose in the San Luis Obispo (Grade II) a year ago,BourbonBayis the 5-to-2 second choice looking for a repeat victory in theSan Marcos. The six-year-old son of Sligo Bay reunites with Rafael Bejarano after winning just once in five tries with a trio of other riders in the saddle.
