Averill Racing, CCF Racing Stable and K Lauren Racing’s multiple stakes winner R Angel Katelyn arrived at historic Pimlico Race Course early Friday morning in advance of her graded stakes debut in the $150,000 Adena Springs Miss Preakness (G3) Friday, May 19.

R Angel Katelyn, a 3-year-old daughter of High Cotton, settled into trainer Kieron Magee’s barn on the Pimlico backstretch following a 16-hour van ride from Tampa, Fla., where her trainer, Gerald Bennett, is based.

“I hauled the horse up myself,” Bennett said. “She shipped good. So far, everything’s good. We got in about 4 o’clock this morning. She’ll go to the track tomorrow and we’ll train her a little bit over it.”

Never worse than third in seven lifetime starts including five wins, four of them in stakes, R Angel Katelyn captured the seven-furlong Sophomore Fillies April 2 at Tampa Bay Downs in her most recent start. She has breezed three times since, including a half-mile in :46 4/5 on Sunday.
“She had a very good work. We were finishing up [the meet] at Tampa so we just let her finish out her works there,” Bennett said. “She’ll jog tomorrow and gallop up to the race to let her get a look at this racetrack. She’s fresh, she’s had a regular pattern of works and she’s doing well. Hopefully she handles this racetrack.”

Bennett, 73, has won 3,657 career races since 1976 with two coming in graded stakes, both by Beau Genius – the Michelin Mile and One-Eighth Handicap (G2) and Islelin Handicap (G1) in 1990. Beau Genius was also the last of 8,833 wins for late Hall of Fame rider Bill Shoemaker, coming Jan. 20, 1990 in the Hallandale Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Also pointing to the six-furlong Miss Preakness for 3-year-old fillies are the pair of Bode’s Dream and Nonna Bella from Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, Deer Valley, Our Majesty, Phone Chick, Pretty City Dancer, Tasteful, Vertical Oak and Yorkiepoo Princess.
