Questions Abound in San Felipe

This year's San Felipe is a wide-open affair that figures to answer all kinds of questions. Will we see the Jaycito that won the Norfolk last year? Can Bench Points go two turns and be this year's Caracortado? What happened to Comma To The Top last time? Are maiden winners Runflatout and Albergatti for real? And will Premier Pegasus show how tough the San Vicente was?
Hopefully, we will get the answers to all of these questions and more on Saturday. The San Felipe goes as race 8 with a post time of 4:07 PT.
The biggest question mark in this race has to be Jaycito. After looking terrific winning the G1 Norfolk, he was sent off as the 3-1 second choice against Uncle Mo in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. That race turned into a debacle as he ended up running closer to the outside rail than the inside one. Now he's with new trainer Bob Baffert, who has been more than patient with this colt. He worked 7 furlongs on February 1, and again February 15 and 21, but won't make his 3-year-old debut until March 12. He was considering the Lewis, opted for the San Vincente and then skipped that for this race. Rumors have swirled that this horse is a bit of a 'head case'. He now goes to the gate with blinkers off. Still, HRN has made him the 3-1 lukewarm favorite on the basis of his powerful win last year. And a strong performance here could vault him into the top three Derby contenders.
