Queen Drama Nearing Debut
Owner-breeder Harold Queen and trainer David Fawkes have made news the
last several seasons through the accomplishments of now 5-year-old Big
Drama, sealing an Eclipse champion sprinter campaign in 2010 with his
stunning victory in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at
Churchill Downs, and 3-year-old half-brother Little Drama also showing
promise competing in Graded stakes earlier this year at Gulfstream Park.
The two siblings out of Riveting Drama, by Notebook, now
have a 2-year-old sister in the barn currently at Calder Casino &
Race Course as Queen Drama posted her second recorded workout Sunday
morning, timed a half-mile in 50 3/5. The daughter of Burning Roma is a
full-brother to Little Drama and a half-brother to Big Drama
(Montbrook).
Big Drama emerged as the leading 2-year-old colt developed
at Calder in 2008 when he swept the three ‘open’ divisions of the
Florida Stallion Stakes series and began his Eclipse champion season
last year winning the $65,000 Ponche Handicap in June and $350,000 Smile
Sprint Handicap (G2) on Summit of Speed day here in July.
Little Drama won the $100,000 Frank Gomez Memorial by 9 ½ lengths here last summer on Summit day in his second career start. In three appearances this season he finished third in the $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes (G2) and $150,000 Swale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream and won the $75,000 Philmont Stakes last out at Parx on Apr. 26.
Little Drama is currently based with Fawkes’ division stabled at Belmont Park this summer and breezed a half-mile on the training track there in 49 Saturday morning, but could be back at Calder for the $200,000 Carry Back Stakes to be run on Summit day this year on Sat., July 9. Little Drama is nominated to the $250,000 Woody Stephen Stakes (G2) to be run at seven furlongs on Belmont Day, Sat., June 11, a race that has frequently yielded prospects for the Carry Back.
