An interesting first-time starter on Friday’s opening-day card is Etruscan for owner-breeder Brereton Jones. The 2-year-old son of Bernardini is the third foal of Eclipse Award winner Proud Spell.
“He is the first Proud Spell baby that I have had,” trainer Larry Jones said Wednesday morning as Etruscan galloped by. “The first one (Indian Spell, who was trained by Eddie Plesa) was a stakes winner and the second (Tiz Possible) hasn’t raced.”
Proud Spell was named champion 3-year-old filly in 2008 when she won the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Alabama (G1). Etruscan is entered in Friday’s fifth race at six furlongs on the main track.
