Prospect Watch: 3 million-dollar colts debut + half to Malathaat

Wednesday, Fair Grounds race 7, $1.1 million half to Guarana
Magical Road, a 3-year-old colt by Quality Road, makes his debut in a 1-mile turf maiden special weight event for trainer Steve Asmussen and Whisper Hill Farm. Guarana was a classy filly who won 5 of 6 lifetime starts, including 3 Grade 1s. Recent Fair Grounds stakes winner Beatbox is another half-sibling in this talented family. Friday, Laurel Park race 3, $1.8 million purchase out of Grade 1 dam
Thielen, a 3-year-old colt by Curlin and out of the Grade 1 winner Angela Renee, debuts for trainer Brittany Russell. Angela Renee won the 2014 Chandelier Stakes (G1) and finished second in the 2015 Ashland (G1). Thielen, who cost $1.8 million at Fasig-Tipton in August 2022, will break from the rail in a field of seven in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special-weight event on the main track. Saturday, Fair Grounds race 5, $1.2 million purchase debuts
Corporal, a 3-year-old son of Gun Runner, makes his debut in a six furlong maiden special weight race for trainer Brad Cox on Louisiana Derby day at the Fair Grounds. He is out of the Grade 3 placed dam Kathballu and fetched $1.2 million at the Keeneland September sale in 2022.
Looking at second and third-time starters, one to keep an eye on is Justice Julia.
Thursday, Gulfstream Park race 2, half-sibling to Malathaat
Justice Julia, a 3-year-old half-sister to six-time Grade 1 winner Malathaat, makes her second career start in Gulfstream race 2 on Thursday for trainer Todd Pletcher. She debuted over a muddy main track at Saratoga in August and finished fifth, but switches to one mile on the grass. Here are Gulfstream Park entries.
