Prospect Watch: Half-sister to Señor Buscador steps up
Horse Racing Nation’s Prospect Watch scans all upcoming entries for starters early in their careers who sold for more than $500,000 at their most recent auction or whose dams or siblings are graded-stakes winners.
Let's take a closer look at a few of the 73 first- and second-time starters of note this weekend.
Saturday
Ellis Park race 2, half-sister to Grade 1 winner Miss Temple City
A Must See, a 3-year-old filly by Catholic Boy, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Miss Temple City, who won Grade 1s in the Maker's Mark Mile, Turf Mile and Matriarch in 2016 for trainer Graham Motion. A Must See is trained by Sarah Hamilton and makes her debut in a maiden special weight sprint on the turf.
Ellis Park race 5, second foal of Grade 1 winner Covfefe
Rothko is a 2-year-old colt by Tapit and out of Grade 1 winner Covfefe. Trained by Brad Cox and also owned by Covefe's owners LNJ Foxwoods, she debuts in a maiden special weight going seven furlongs on the main track.
Del Mar race 5, half-sibling to Señor Buscador
After a breaking her maiden in her first start last November at Zia Park, Aye Candy returns in a tough step-up in class to allowance company at Del Mar. The 3-year-old filly by Candy Ride is trained by Todd Fincher and owned by Joe Peacock, who have campaigned Señor Buscador to over $12 million in earnings.
Del Mar race 11, second foal of champion Stellar Wind
Magnify, a 3-year-old colt by Justify, makes his second career start after finishing ninth in his debut at Santa Anita in May. Trainer Bob Baffert switches the colt to turf for this one-mile maiden special weight race for owners Magnier, Smith and Tabor.
Sunday
Ellis Park race 6, half-brother to Grade 1 winner Life Is Good
Most Wanted, a 3-year-old colt by Candy Ride, is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Life Is Good. Trained by Brad Cox, he won his debut by a neck at Churchill Downs and now goes in a one-mile allowance over the Ellis Park main track.
Saratoga race 7, half-sister to Roses for Debra
Yesterday is a 2-year-old filly by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and is a half-sister to the multiple-graded-stakes-winning turf sprinter, Roses for Debra. Trainer George Weaver has this Pennyslvania-bred filly ready for a 1 1/16-mile debut on turf. Yesterday races for owners Gatsas Stable, R.A. Hill Stable and the Estate of Brereton Jones.
