Prospect Watch: McPeek debuts $650,000 Curlin colt
Horse Racing Nation’s Prospect Watch scans all upcoming entries for starters early in their careers who sold for more than $500,000 at their most recent auction or whose dams or siblings are graded-stakes winners.
Several siblings of Grade 1 winners are set to debut this post-Breeders' Cup weekend, as is the first foal of a popular Grade-3-winning mare. Here are the highlights among 49 who hit the Prospect Watch criteria.
Thursday
Churchill Downs race 9. Oh Monaco, a 2-year-old colt sired by Curlin out of the mare Byrama, is a full brother to 2021 Florida Derby winner Known Agenda. Oh Monaco was a $650,000 purchase by Resolute Racing's John Stewart at Keeneland September 2023. He starts in this one-mile maiden special weight on dirt for trainer Kenny McPeek and will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., who paired to win this year's Kentucky Derby and Oaks.
Friday
Aqueduct race 1. Game Chaser, a 2-year-old filly by first-year sire Game Winner, debuts for trainer Linda Rice at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. Game Chaser's dam is Shehadmefromhello, an Empire Maker mare who produced Grade 1 Test winner Separationofpowers. She is a homebred for Summer Wind Farm and will be ridden by Jose Lezcano.
Saturday
Aqueduct race 1. Tux is a 2-year-old colt sired by Tapit out of the Grade-3 winning mare Fancy Dress Party. Tux debuts for owner-breeder LNJ Foxwoods at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. Trainer Bill Mott conditions the colt, and jockey Junior Alvarado is in the irons. Fancy Dress Party won the 2019 Beaumont stakes at Keeneland.
Sunday
Laurel Park race 1. Somnium, a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Caravel, is an also-eligible in this 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight on turf. In her first start going the same distance on Oct. 26, Somnium made an impressive late run to just miss the win. Owner-breeder Elizabeth Merryman also trains the daughter of Street Boss out of the Congrats mare Zeezee Zoomzoom.
