Prospect Watch: Half-sibling to Life Is Good debuts at Churchill
Horse Racing Nation’s Prospect Watch scans all upcoming entries for starters early in their careers who sold for more than $500,000 at their most recent auction or whose dams or siblings are graded-stakes winners.
Among this week's runners who meet the Prospect Watch criteria are these spotlight maidens:
Thursday
Churchill Downs race 8, $1.5 million Gun Runner filly
Islander is a 3-year-old filly sired by Gun Runner and out of the mare Tip At Tapit. She was a $1.5 million yearling at Keeneland September 2022 for Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm, who race her in partnership. In the same Steve Asmussen barn as her sire, she begins her career going seven furlongs on dirt with jockey Cristian Torres up.
Friday
Churchill Downs race 9, half-sibling to Grade 1 winner Life Is Good
Most Wanted is a 3-year-old colt sired by Candy Ride out of the mare Beach Walk. He is a half-sibling Life Is Good, winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Pegasus World Cup (G1), Whitney (G1) and other top-level stakes. Life Is Good was a horse of the year runner-up in 2022. This younger sibling is owned by Gary and Mary West and is trained by Brad Cox. He debuts going seven furlongs on dirt with Florent Geroux in the saddle.
Saturday
Laurel Park race 1, first foal of Breeders' Cup winner Sharing
Sharedashenanigans is a 2-year-old filly sired by Into Mischief whose dam is Sharing, winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Sharing followed that effort with wins in the Tepin Stakes and the Edgewood (G2). This is her first foal. Sharedashenanigans is trained by Graham Motion for Boardshorts racing. She will kick off her career going five furlongs on dirt with Victor Carrasco in the irons.
Second-timers to watch
Penny Royal, a full sister to champion Good Magic, makes her second start at Churchill Downs on Saturday. She finished fifth to Prides Crossing in her May 25 debut. This time she stretches out to 1 1/16 miles.
Results
Mentee, the 2-year-old full brother of Fierceness, left watchers buzzing in his track-record-setting debut at Belmont at Aqueduct. The speedy colt sprinted five furlongs in 56.97 seconds, shaving 2 seconds off the track record.
Complexion, the 2-year-old filly half-sister to Jack Christopher, impressed in her debut for Belmont Stakes-winning trainer Danny Gargan. She dusted her foes at Belmont at Aqueduct easily, going five furlongs on dirt.
