Prospect Watch: Half-sibling to Encino debuts at Fair Grounds

This week's Prospect Watch features a strong collection of young horses with elite bloodlines making their debuts and early career appearances.

Leading the debuts are horses from champion families including daughters of Grade 1 winners and several prospects with purchase prices exceeding a half-million dollars. The week offers compelling viewing for those seeking the next generation of stars from proven bloodlines.

Thursday

Gulfstream Park race 5 showcases A Moment a Love, a 3-year-old filly by Kantharos making her debut for Darsan. This homebred daughter of Meets Expectations brings compelling family credentials through her half-brother World of Trouble, a Grade 1 winner who earned $1.26 million during his career. The filly will contest one mile on turf for trainer Carlos David with Irad Ortiz Jr. taking the mount from post position two. Morning-line odds are set at 9-2 in a competitive field of 14.

Code Review returns for his second career start in Colonial race 2 after breaking his maiden impressively on Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park. This 3-year-old colt by Uncle Mo won his debut by 1 1/2 lengths over 6 furlongs on dirt and earned a 100 Horse Racing Nation speed figure. Out of Chattertown, he is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Laoban, who earned $526,000 during his career. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. moves him up to one mile on dirt for owners C2 Racing Stable, Ken T. Reimer, JRM Stables and Tami Bobo, with Tyler Gaffalione retaining the mount.

Friday

Fair Grounds race 5 features Startin Trouble, a 3-year-old filly by Practical Joke making her career debut for Front Page Equestrian. This daughter of Conway Two Step is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Naughty Gal, who earned $153,000 during her career. Trainer Whit Beckman has the filly ready for six furlongs on dirt with jockey Jose L. Ortiz aboard from post four. Morning-line odds are set at 4-1 in the seven-horse field.

Fair Grounds race 6 presents Tarzana, a 3-year-old filly by Street Boss debuting for Godolphin. Out of Glittering Jewel, she is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Encino, who earned $803,000 during his career. The homebred filly will tackle one mile on turf for trainer Brad Cox with Marcelino Pedroza Jr. taking the mount from post nine. She enters at 7-2 morning-line odds in a field of 10.

Fair Grounds race 7 showcases two first-time starters with Grade 1 connections. Be the Light, a 3-year-old filly by Medaglia d'Oro, debuts for Godolphin as a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winners including Grade 3 winner Shared Sense. Brad Cox trains. Fast Gun, a 3-year-old filly by Gun Runner, makes her first start for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds. She is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Stolen Base. Steve Asmussen trains. Both fillies will contest six furlongs on dirt.

Saturday

Colonial Downs race 1 features Tilson, a 3-year-old colt by Instagrand making his debut for OXO Equine. This homebred son of Grade 1 winner Cambier Parc brings exceptional credentials as his dam earned $850,000 and captured four graded stakes victories during her brilliant racing career. Trainer William Walden has Jaime Torres up for the mount for six furlongs on dirt in a field of five.

Gulfstream Park race 5 presents Amani's Music, a 3-year-old filly by Maclean's Music debuting for Sumaya U.S. Stables. This daughter of Chilean Grade 1 winner Amani brings international stakes-winning credentials through her dam, who earned $385,000. Trainer Brad Cox has the filly ready for five furlongs on turf with Javier Castellano aboard from post 2 in a field of 15.

Second- and third-time starters

Twelfth Night returns for his third career start in Friday's Turf Paradise race 5 after finishing fourth in his last outing on Feb. 19. This 4-year-old colt by Quality Road is out of Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, who earned $343,000 and captured two graded stakes during her career. More impressively, he is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Pauline's Pearl, who earned $2.15 million including six graded-stakes victories. Despite showing 78 HRN speed figure in his last start, the breeding credentials keep him firmly on the prospect radar. Charles C. Henderson owns the colt trained by Vann Belvoir.

Star Actress makes her second start at Gulfstream Park race 4 after finishing second, beaten half a length in her debut on Feb. 8. This 3-year-old filly by Justify earned a solid 100 HRN speed figure in that effort and is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Just F Y I, who earned $1.73 million during her stellar career. Trainer Bill Mott moves her up to 1 1/16 miles on dirt for owner George Krikorian, with Junior Alvarado retaining the mount.

Dr. Park makes his third career start at Colonial Downs race 5 following his impressive maiden victory on April 9 at Keeneland. This 5-year-old colt by Uncle Mo won by half a length and earned a strong 110 HRN speed figure in that breakthrough performance. He is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Forte, who earned over $3 million during his championship campaign. The $850,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase races for C R K Stable under trainer Peter Eurton's care, with Martin Chuan taking the mount at 3-1 morning-line odds.
