Prospect Watch: Galaxy of future stars are in action at Keeneland
This week's Prospect Watch focuses on young horses with elite bloodlines making their debuts and early career starts at Keeneland. Many of the second- and third-timers are stepping into stakes company for a chance at the Breeders' Cup.
The featured debutants include horses from some of the most successful female families in recent racing history. Commandment represents the family of Grade 1 winner Sippican Harbor, and Bella Ballerina carries the bloodlines of Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Pretty Mischievous. Several second-time starters also merit attention, including Elite, the younger sister of Kentucky Derby winner Authentic.
Friday
The weekend's action begins Friday at Keeneland race 10 with several well-bred fillies making their debuts in a competitive 1 1/16-mile turf contest. Inkling steps out for the first time as a 2-year-old filly by Street Sense out of Grade 2 winner Penwith. Trainer Eoin Harty has the Godolphin homebred ready for her debut with Vincent Cheminaud aboard at 15-1 morning-line odds. Her half-brother Cornishman captured the Cornhusker and has earned $352,000 to date.
Also debuting in that same Keeneland race is Scarlet Wave, a 2-year-old filly by Justify out of Nina Fever. The Riley Mott-trained filly represents a powerful female family through her half-sister Nickname, a Grade 1 winner who earned $558,000. Owned by Mrs. John Magnier and Resolute Racing, Scarlet Wave draws post 12 with Jaime Torres aboard at 15-1 morning-line odds. The Justify sire line has shown consistent success with fillies in their debut efforts.
Saturday
Saturday's highlight comes at Keeneland race 2 with Commandment making his debut. This 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief is out of Grade 1 winner Sippican Harbor, who earned $263,000 during her racing career. Trainer Brad Cox has the Wathnan Racing homebred ready for six furlongs on dirt with Irad Ortiz Jr. taking the mount from post 2. The Into Mischief and Grade 1-winning dam combination creates high expectations for this debut performance.
The same Keeneland race features Gallivant, a 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief out of Grade 3 winner Fancy Dress Party. Trainer Ben Colebrook has the LNJ Foxwoods homebred ready with Luan Machado aboard from post 7. This colt represents another strong Into Mischief and graded stakes-winning dam combination, with his dam having earned $267,000 during her career.
Sunday
Sunday's action at Keeneland race 5 features Bella Ballerina, a 2-year-old filly by Street Sense making her debut. She is out of Grade 1 winner Pretty City Dancer and represents one of the most successful recent female families through her half-sister Pretty Mischievous, the Kentucky Oaks winner who earned over $2.11 million. Trainer Brendan Walsh has the Godolphin homebred ready for six furlongs on dirt with Tyler Gaffalione taking the mount from post 8.
The same race includes Completely Elegant, a 2-year-old filly by Uncle Mo out of Itsagiantcauseway. This filly earned her prospect status through her half-brother Mucho Gusto, a Grade 1 winner who earned $4.45 million and captured multiple graded-stakes victories, including the Pegasus World Cup (G1). Trainer Victoria Oliver has the Teneri Farms homebred ready with Luis Saez aboard from post 2.
Second- and third-time starters
Elite returns for her second career start Sunday at Keeneland race 5 after finishing sixth in her debut at Ellis Park on Aug. 23. This 2-year-old filly by Into Mischief earned her prospect status through her full brother Authentic, the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winner who earned over $7.2 million. She earned a 72 Horse Racing Nation speed figure in her debut effort and will be ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. The champion sibling connection keeps her firmly on the prospect radar despite the disappointing debut.
Ginger Ale makes her third career start at Keeneland race 3 on Friday after showing promise in recent efforts. This 2-year-old filly by Into Mischief is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Search Results, who earned $1.94 million during her career. The filly finished third, beaten 13 1/4 lengths, in her last start at Ellis Park on Aug. 24 while earning a 70 HRN speed figure. Brisset moves her to turf for the first time with Flavien Prat aboard.
The Jessamine (G2) on Friday features six previous Prospect Watch fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the Keeneland turf for a slot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Dyna, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Force the Pass; Infinite Sky, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Wet Paint; and Time to Dream, half-sister to Red Carpet Ready are just three of the elite fillies lining up in this stakes.
On Sunday, Dr. Agne steps into stakes company again for his third career start in the Bourbon (G2) at Keeneland. The Cherie DeVaux-trained colt is the son of champion Lady Eli.
