Prospect Watch: Elite young horses run at Turfway, Oaklawn

This week's Prospect Watch highlights promising bloodlines across the mid-winter racing scene, featuring first-time starters and lightly raced horses from champion families.

The headliners include multiple horses from Grade 1-winning families and several with significant auction prices. Young horses from sire lines such as Charlatan, Essential Quality and Into Mischief represent the next generation of potential stakes horses as they begin their racing careers during the quieter winter months.

Wednesday

Turfway Park race 5 features My Steel Magnolia making her debut for trainer Caio Caramori. This 2-year-old filly by Essential Quality is out of Knarsdale and is a half-sister to Seismic Beauty, who captured the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) and earned $477,000. The filly will tackle six furlongs on the synthetic surface with Oscar Villarreal aboard for owner LCI. Morning-line odds are set at 10-1 in the 14-horse maiden special weight field.

Also in that same Turfway Park race is Overlook, a 2-year-old filly by Hard Spun making her first start for Godolphin and trainer Michael Stidham. She is out of the Grade 3 winner Elsa, an Animal Kingdom mare who won her sole stakes race at one mile on turf. Joseph Ramos takes the mount from post 1 at 10-1 morning-line odds.

Friday

Oaklawn race 7 brings together Cognizant, a 2-year-old filly by Silver State trained by Steve Asmussen for Winchell Thoroughbreds. She is out of Easy Tap and brings solid family credentials through her half-brother Tap Daddy, who won the listed James W. Murphy stakes at Pimlico before becoming a multiple Grade 1 winner in Venezuela. Johan Rosado rides the filly from post 2 at 7-2 morning-line odds in the 14-horse maiden special weight field going six furlongs on dirt.

Also debuting at Oaklawn is Pipinna, a 2-year-old filly by Tacitus out of Grade 2-winning dam Perseverante, who was bred and had her career in Chile. Trainer Dan Ward has the Don Alberto Corp. homebred ready for six furlongs on dirt with Francisco Arrieta aboard from post 5.

Saturday

Oaklawn race 9 features Fifty Four Yarder, a 2-year-old colt by Violence making his debut for trainer Kelly Von Hemel. He is out of Reggae Rose and is a half-brother to Whatmakessammyrun, who won the Eddie D Stakes (G2) and earned over $502,000 in a six year span and 36 starts. The colt will go six furlongs on dirt with Israel Hernandez aboard for Albaugh Family Stables from post 8.

In the same race, Predators' Ball makes his first start for trainer Randy Morse. This 2-year-old colt by Charlatan is out of the Dixie Union mare Inventive and brings Grade 1 connections through his half-brother Klimt, who earned $469,000 and captured multiple graded stakes. Ricardo Santana Jr. has the mount from post 12 for owners Alex and JoAnn Lieblong.

Second-time starters

Remix returns for his second career start at Remington Park race 1 after finishing third in his debut at Zia Park on Nov. 25. This 3-year-old colt by Gun Runner is trained by Steve Asmussen for Winchell Thoroughbreds and is a half-brother to Finite, who won the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) and earned $850,000. He earned a 90 Horse Racing Nation speed figure in his debut and will be ridden by Erik Asmussen at 9-2 morning-line odds.

Boca Beach Club makes his second start in Friday's Advent stakes at Oaklawn after breaking his maiden impressively at Hawthorne on Nov. 2. This 2-year-old colt by Omaha Beach won his debut by 5 3/4 lengths and brings Grade 1 family credentials through his half-brother, Mexico Horse of the Year Mi Vecino. Ricardo Santana Jr. rides the Doubledown Stables runner from post 4 at 3-1 morning-line odds in the seven-horse field.

Little Georgie returns for her second start at Gulfstream Park race 9 after finishing second in her debut there on Oct. 24. This 2-year-old filly by Charlatan earned an 87 HRN speed figure when beaten just 1 3/4 lengths and is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Travel Column, who earned $699,000. Edgard Zayas rides for J and J Stables and the Welker family from post 1.

Third-time starters

McRavin makes his third career start in Saturday's Tropical Park Derby at Gulfstream after finishing second in an allowance race at Laurel Park on Oct. 25. This 3-year-old colt by Uncle Mo earned a 107 HRN speed figure in that effort and is a half-brother to Grade 1-winning turf mare Civil Union, who earned $484,000 in her career. Jorge Ruiz rides the Joseph Allen runner from post 13 in the 13-horse turf stakes field.

Cadenza competes for the third time in her career at Turfway Park race 2 after breaking her maiden impressively at Saratoga on Aug. 28. This 2-year-old filly by Charlatan is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Sneaking Out, who earned $531,000. Irad Ortiz Jr. rides the Stonestreet Stables runner trained by Brad Cox from post 10.

Little Miss Curlin steps up to stakes company for her third start in her career at Fair Grounds in the Louisiana Champions Lassie after capturing the Donovan L. Ferguson Memorial Stakes on Nov. 21. This 2-year-old filly by Charlatan won that race by five lengths and earned a 116 HRN speed figure. She is out of Grade 2 winner Mylady Curlin, who earned $806,000, and is a homebred for Coteau Grove Farms. Jareth Loveberry rides the 6-5 morning-line favorite from post 5.
