Prospect Watch: California Chrome’s brother debuts Friday

Friday
California Chrome’s 2-year-old brother
Churchill Downs entries, race 8. Champion California Chrome’s latest sibling to debut is Buzz Rocket, a 2-year-old son of Curlin trained by Bill Mott and owned by Frank Fletcher Racing. He was purchased at the Fasig-Tipton October 2023 sale for $460,000.
Buzz Rocket debuts in a one mile, $120,000 maiden special weight on the main track. He’s been working steadily, starting in June at Saratoga with the last several works at Belmont. Florent Géroux has the call.
Saturday
Belmont at Aqueduct race 8 features the debut of Lakeside, a 2-year-old filly half-sibling to Cave Rock. Cave Rock won the American Pharoah and Del Mar Futurity at 2 before running 2nd to Forte in the BC Juvenile. This filly is sired by Improbable and is out of the Bellamy Road mare Georgie's Angel. LNJ Foxwoods owns the New York-bred and Rick Dutrow trains her for this debut, where she is a main track only entry going 6 furlongs on the inner turf.
Churchill Downs race 4 is where Vermelho, a half-sibling to stakes winner Lone Rock makes his career debut. Trainer Cherie DeVaux preps the colt for this maiden special weight affair for 2-year-olds going 6 furlongs on dirt and with a field of 12 youngsters. Vermelho is sired by Constitution out of the Hard Spun mare Ruby Lips and is owned by Belladonna Racing, Twin Brooks Stables, Woodford Racing, Rod Hatfield and Taylor Creek. Lone Rock is a multiple graded stakes winner at distances over 1 1/2 miles, so don't be surprised if this turns out to be too short a spot for Vermelho.
Concord Green, a winning first-timer profiled here in August, is back and stepping up to stakes competition in the Pilgrim (G2) at Belmont at Aqueduct. Concord Green is a War Front-sired half-sibling to Scarlet Sky and has the same owner and trainer, Shug McGaughey for Stuart Janney.
Sunday
Churchill Downs race 10 features 3 notable firsters going 6 furlongs on dirt:
Jewel Box, a 2-year-old filly sired by Street Sense is a half-sibling to McCracken, winner of the Sam F. Davis and Matt Winn at 3. Jewel Box has the same team of trainer Ian Wilkes and owner Janis R. Whitham.
Souk Plaza is a half-sibling to Lexington Stakes winner, Encino. Sired by Street Boss and out of the dam Glittering Jewel, Souk Plaza is trained by Brad Cox for owner/breeder Godolphin.
Finally, Princess Em Too is a Not This Time filly out of the G2-winning mare, Princess Warrior. Phil D'Amato trains for owners Evan Trommer and Mark Martinez, who also owned the dam. Princess Warrior won the Mrs. Revere on turf and the Latonia on synthetic.
