Prospect Watch: Breeders' Cup week newcomers

This week's Prospect Watch highlights first-time starters with exceptional bloodlines debuting at Churchill Downs, Belmont at Aqueduct and Del Mar. The lineup features horses by champion dams and siblings of Grade 1 winners making their racing debuts across the week's cards.

Notable first-time starters include Commandment, a 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief out of Grade 1 winner Sippican Harbor, and Show Me the Munny, another 2-year-old colt by Munnings from Grade 1-winning mare Include Me Out. 

Wednesday

Churchill Downs race 7 features Survivin'onaprayer, a 2-year-old colt by Connect out of Grade 1-placed Bon Jovi Girl. The colt brings graded-stakes connections through his half-brother You're to Blame, a Grade 3 winner who earned $890,000. Survivin'onaprayer will tackle seven furlongs on dirt with Jane Elliott aboard for trainer Sarah Hamilton. The colt races for a partnership of Hamilton, Randy Finegan, Norris Bristow, Jason Ash and Kristine Kash and is listed at 20-1 on the morning line.

Also at Churchill Downs on Wednesday, race 7 includes a second-time starter with a Grade 3-winning sibling. Fatguyinlittlecoat returns for trainer Lindsay Schultz after finishing third in his debut at Keeneland on Oct. 11, beaten three-quarters of a length while earning a 103 Horse Racing Nation speed figure. The 2-year-old colt by Code of Honor is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Beer Can Man.

Race 10 features Mr Entertainer, a 3-year-old colt by Twirling Candy making his second start after finishing eighth at Ellis Park on Aug. 9. He earned a 57 HRN speed figure in that debut and is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Durante, who has earned $959,000. The colt races for owner-breeder Altair Farms with trainer Bret Calhoun.

Thursday

Del Mar race 3 presents Raging Inferno, a 2-year-old colt by Raging Bull making his debut for trainer Dan Blacker. The colt is out of Grade 2 winner Great Hot, a Brazilian-bred mare who earned $594,000 and captured two graded stakes. Raging Inferno will tackle one mile on turf with Juan Hernandez aboard for MyRacehorse or Owlcatraz Racing Stable.

At Belmont at Aqueduct race 5, Gaborone makes his second start after finishing seventh in his debut at the same track on Oct. 2. The 2-year-old colt by Oscar Performance earned a 61 HRN speed figure in that effort and is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Charming Kitten, who earned over $1.02 million. Trainer Bill Mott has the colt ready for 1 1/16 miles on turf with Jose Lezcano aboard.

Friday

Churchill Downs race 7 brings together several second-time starters with elite connections. Paige Turner returns after a strong second-place finish Aug. 31 at Saratoga, beaten 1 3/4 lengths while earning a 96 HRN speed figure. The 2-year-old filly by Army Mule is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Speed Boat Beach and races for David Ingordo, West Point Thoroughbreds and Danbro Farms with trainer Cherie DeVaux.

The same race includes Romulan, a 2-year-old filly by Maxfield who finished fourth in her debut Sept. 23 at Indiana Grand. The filly is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Wavell Avenue, who earned $1.20 million during her career. Romulan earned a 62 HRN speed figure in her debut and will be ridden by Evin A. Roman for trainer Paulo Lobo.

Saturday

Belmont at Aqueduct race 6 features Life and Times, a 4-year-old gelding by Justify making his racing debut for trainer Todd Pletcher. The colt is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Restless Rider, who earned $894,000 during her career. Life and Times will tackle one mile on dirt with Jose Lezcano aboard for owner Michael B. Tabor.

Churchill Downs race 6 showcases two promising first-time starters. Commandment returns for trainer Brad Cox after showing promise in his debut Oct. 4 at Keeneland, where he finished fourth while earning a 107 HRN speed figure. The 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief is out of Grade 1 winner Sippican Harbor and races for Wathnan Racing. His dam earned $263,000 during her racing career.

Show Me the Munny also makes his second start in Churchill Downs race 6 after finishing 10th in his debut on Sept 26. The 2-year-old colt by Munnings is out of Grade 1 winner Include Me Out, who earned $957,000 and won four graded stakes. The homebred races for Jay Em Ess Stable with trainer Paul McGee and jockey Colby Hernandez aboard.

Other second- and third-timers

Believable returns to Belmont at Aqueduct for the Tempted Stakes after breaking her maiden there impressively Sept. 28, winning by a nose while earning a 94 HRN speed figure. The 2-year-old filly by Curlin is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Tenfold, who earned $1.29 million. Trainer Todd Pletcher has her ready for stakes competition with Kendrick Carmouche aboard.

Subito enters Churchill Downs race 7 on Thursday after breaking his maiden impressively there Sept. 13, winning by a neck with a 101 HRN speed figure. The 3-year-old colt by Speightstown is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Obligatory, who earned $1.38 million. The Juddmonte homebred races for trainer Bill Mott with Jaime Torres taking the mount.

The Palace Girl makes her third career start Sunday at Churchill Downs race 5 after finishing ninth in her last start at Keeneland. The 3-year-old German-bred filly is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Tamfana, who has earned $707,000. She earned an 82 HRN speed figure in her most recent effort and races for Woodford Thoroughbreds with trainer William Walden.
