Ron Paolucci’s Loooch Racing Stables finished one-two in the $75,000 Scarlet & Gray Handicap at JACK Thistledown Racino Saturday when Proper Discretion caught stablemate Katalust in the last jumps to win by a neck. Orientate to Luv finished 4 1/2 lengths behind Katalust to take third.

Final time for the six-furlong race for Ohio-bred fillies and mares was 1:10.46. Luis Colon was aboard for winning trainer Tony Rini.

La Nina Bronca broke first but Katalust quickly took the lead to set the pace in :22.66 and :45.86 as Proper Discretion raced a couple lengths behind to her outside. Proper Discretion hooked her stablemate on the turn, Katalust clocked :58.08 with a furlong to run and the two put on a show to the wire. Rini was pleased with both efforts.

“I was proud of both fillies,” said Rini. “I was especially proud of Katalust because she’s more of a route filly but there wasn’t much pace, so she wound up on the front end. Proper Discretion showed a lot more patience today. She’s been a speed-crazy son of a gun so we took the blinkers off today and she relaxed. They ran exactly backwards (to form).”

La Nina Bronca was fourth, followed by Ali Blue and Purple Flowers. Put Up With It, a third part of the Loooch entry, was scratched.

The entry was sent off the 1-5 favorite and paid $2.40 to win. Neither place nor show wagering was offered on the race.

A 4-year-old filly by Discreetly Mine, Proper Discretion improved her record to 9-2-3 in 16 starts and increased her earnings to $283,166. Bred by Bruce Tallisman, she is out of Prizes, by Prized.

JACK Thistledown begins its switch from Friday racing to Tuesdays beginning tomorrow, Sept. 5. Post time remains 1:40 p.m. ET.
