Project Whiskey pulls off 38-1 upset in $300,000 Delaware Oaks

Project Whiskey wasn’t supposed to be a contender in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks. The daughter of Tapizar was 12/1 on the morning line and had fallen to 38/1 before the start of the race.
The Robert Reid- trained filly, ridden by Frankie Pennington, shocked the world and ruined some cross-country pick 5s by coming up the outside and pulling ahead of second-place finisher, Dream Marie, to take the victory
America’s Day at the Races commentator Andy Serling was stunned by the result.
“I can’t make her Greg [Wolf],” Serling said after the race. “She was a pitcheroo from me.”
The victory means that Project Whiskey wins 40 points towards entry into the September 4 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. The second place finisher, Dream Marie, gained 30 points and the third place filly, Princess Cadey, took 20 points. “I am glad we went down to Churchill to get that race in her which set her up perfectly for this,” Reid said in a press release. “I think this is what she has been waiting to do – to go a route ground. We are not sure where we are going to go next with her, but I am sure it will probably have the word “Oaks” behind it.
The win is Project Whiskey’s first in a graded stakes. She paid out $79.60 for the win, 25.60 to place and 12.80 to show. Dream Marie paid 10.20 and 7.20, while Princess Cadey paid out 7.20.
