Presque Isle: Masters Stakes Wide Open

Twelve fillies and mares are entered for the fifth running of Grade 2 $400,000 Masters Stakes on Saturday at Presque Isle Downs & Casino. There is no clear-cut favorite but a Hall of Fame rider is in the mix for the 61/2-furlong sprint.

Kent Desormeaux, who has 5,414 career wins and six Triple Crown victories, will ride Pennsylvania-bred Ariana D, who has finished second in stakes races at Woodbine in her past two starts. The 5-year-old mare won the Northern Fling Stakes at PID in 2010.

Sweet Lorena returns for her third straight Masters, having finished second in 2009 and third in 2010 to two-time winner Informed Decision. In a dramatic finish in 2010, Informed Decision caught eventual 2010 Eclipse Award-winning female sprinter Dubai Majesty to win by a nose. Sweet Lorena, 7, a regular at PID who will have Luis Perez aboard, has two seconds and a third in three races this year.

Waccamaw, who finished fourth in 2010, also returns with Ron Allen the rider.
