President Trump: Kentucky Derby DQ 'not a good one'
The debate over stewards' decision to disqualify Maximum Security, placing Country House atop the order, became essentially impossible for the general public to ignore Sunday morning when President Donald Trump addressed it through his preferred means of communication.
Taking to Twitter, Trump said the call "was not a good one."
"It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track," Trump continued," actually, a beautiful thing to watch. Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur.
"The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby - not even close!"
Another columnist, Reinier Macatangay, agreed, saying "the best horse actually crossed the wire first." But he further explained by Maximum Security had to come down, writing that, "Assuming rules are rules and the stewards apply some consistency to them, the fact that this is the Kentucky Derby is supposed to make no difference, as all races are races and deserve consistent rulings."
For his part, Bill Mott, who trains Country House, said Sunday morning that, “I feel terrible that I have to apologize for winner. I really feel terrible for the connections — for the owners. I hate to sit there and apologize saying something as foolish as, ‘I’m sorry I won,’ because I don’t want to give them the wrong impression that I’m unhappy winning, because I’m not.
"I’m thrilled. I’m thrilled for the horses. I’m thrilled for anyone who worked with the horse. I think they deserve to win. But it’s just such an unusual way to go to the winner’s circle and win a Kentucky Derby.
“...We’re going to take the win. We’re going to take it, and hopefully Country House runs big in the future, whatever race it may be, and sort of redeems himself a little bit.”
