Preakness Stakes 2021: Baffert's Medina Spirit is #3 at 9-5 odds
Medina Spirit, the controversial winner of the Kentucky Derby, drew post position No. 3 for Saturday's Preakness Stakes and was made the morning-line favorite at 9-5.
Until a few hours before the draw, there was some doubt whether Medina Spirit would be allowed in the starting gate after testing positive for the anti-inflammatory medication betamethasone in the wake of the Derby.
But trainer Bob Baffert and the Maryland Jockey Club reached an agreement that would allow extra testing of the Protonico colt and for two stablemates: Concert Tour, the 5-2 second choice in the Preakness, and Beautiful Gift, entered in Friday's Black-Eyed Susan.

Baffert will be seeking his record eighth Preakness victory. His Derby win with Medina Spirit was his seventh – also a record. But that win is in jeopardy; if the result from a second sample test also shows a positive for the medication, Medina Spirit's victory would be invalidated.
Churchill Downs suspended Baffert in the wake of the finding and is awaiting conclusion of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's investigation "Before taking further steps."
The Preakness is the 13th of 14 races on Saturday’s card at Pimlico. Post time is 6:47 p.m. EDT.
