Preakness 2025 early line: Ranking 9 possible starters by odds

With the Preakness 2025 just a week away, let's take a look at how the odds would look if the nine possible starters all broke from the gate today. Even though the field is in flux, we can get a good idea of what we will be looking at next weekend.

With the defections of Sovereignty and Rodriguez, this race runs through Kentucky Derby runner-up Journalism should he start in the race. While Journalism is on the fence, that has to be a difficult situation for Preakness race officials. Sure, they would love to have Journalism run. But if he doesn't run in the Preakness, this race could make sense for several other 3-year-olds out there. In fact, two of the favorites in Saturday's Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes, Captain Cook and Hill Road, would certainly be among the top favorites if Journalism were not to run.

But looking at this group of nine, Journalism stands out as a clear favorite. After that one would think Goal Oriented would take a lot of money given his undefeated record in two starts and being trained by Bob Baffert, who is going for his ninth Preakness win.

After that River Thames catches the eye being trained by Todd Pletcher and coming off a narrow loss to Sovereignty in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and a good third in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1). After the top three, a few horses could be clustered together in the 6-1 to 10-1 range. Currently, I have Clever Again, American Promise and Gosger in those spots.

But a lot can change in a week or at least before entries are taken Monday, For now here are the current projected Preakness 2025 odds.

Here is the Preakness field with sire, trainer, jockey and last start listed as well as links to each contender's profile page.
