Trainer Chad Brown's plan to have Early Voting bypass the Kentucky Derby and point to the 2022 Preakness Stakes proved wise, as the Gun Runner colt beat favored Epicenter to go 3-for-4 on his career.

Preakness 2022 race replay

Here's a quick look at the 2022 Preakness.

Race recap

Early Voting was the third choice for the Preakness at 5-1 and was expected to be the pacesetter. West Coast runner Armagnac took the early lead around the first turn. He covered the first a half-mile in 47.44 seconds and six furlongs in 1:11.50. Jose Ortiz and Early Voting sat no more than 2 1/2 lengths off the pace and then took control of the lead from Armagnac (18-1) just before straightening for home.

Post-time favorite Epicenter (6-5) got bottlenecked at the start but was coming fast at the end, finishing 1 1/4 lengths short in second. Armagnac faded to seventh.

The winning time for 1 3/16 miles on a fast track at Pimlico was 1:54.54. Creative Minister finished third, with filly Secret Oaks in fourth.

Owned by Klaravich Stables, Early Voting paid $13.40 to win.

And here's a look at Jose Ortiz and Early Voting getting the blanket of Black-Eyed Susans after the race.

Early Voting's career

Early Voting is a Gun Runner colt out of Amour d'Ete and was bred by Three Chimneys Farm. Klaravich Stables bought him for $200,000 at Keeneland's September Yearling sale.

His debuted in a one-mile maiden special weight at Aqueduct in December, winning by 1 1/2 lengths under Ortiz, who has ridden the colt in all four of his starts.

Next up was the Withers (G3) in February, also at Aqueduct, where Early Voting led throughout and won by 4 1/2 lengths over Un Ojo, who would go on to win the Rebel Stakes (G2).

Early Voting's third start was in the Wood Memorial (G2), again at Aqueduct. He led from the start to the final strides, when he was overtaken by Mo Donegal.

Early Voting will not run in the Belmont Stakes, with Brown looking at a summer campaign at Saratoga.

Preakness 2022 analysis

There is a valid argument that Epicenter, who also finished second in the Kentucky Derby, ran the best race in the Preakness. At a minimum, says Reinier Macatangay, an oddly passive ride by Joel Rosario and subsequent bad trip cost the Steve Asmussen trainee his chance to win. Read more here.

Matt Shutty agrees that Epicenter had a bad trip – and argues that Secret Oath had an even more devastating trip under Luis Saez. Read more here.

And Ron Flatter looks at why pari-mutuel betting on Preakness 2022 looked out of whack all day in ways that led to muttering at Pimlico and kneejerk reaction on social media. Read more here.
