Preachintothedevil returned to New
York-bred company and the winner's circle Sunday afternoon at Belmont
Park, sweeping to an easy victory in the $100,000 Mike Lee and snapping a
four-race losing streak.
Winless since taking the restricted Champagneforashley at Aqueduct Racetrack on New Year's Day, the 3-year-old Pulpit colt made short work of his five opponents in the Mike Lee, advancing to the lead while three-wide on the turn and pulling clear through the stretch to hit the wire 4 ¼ lengths ahead of Tap Attack.
His time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.44.
Preachintothedevil, now 3-0-1 in four starts facing state-breds, collected $60,000 to extend his earnings to $164,520 for Crossed Sabres Farm. Trained by Gary Contessa, Preachintothedevil returned $10.40 for a $2 win bet to his backers in the crowd of 6,789 as the 4-1 second choice.
Tap Attack, the longest shot on the board at 12-1, was 2 ½ lengths in front of Pin Number, who was followed by Bound by Humor, favored Bug Juice, and Darrin's Dilemma.
In the $100,000 Bouwerie for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies, 4-5 favorite Ava K. took the lead on the turn and drew off to post a 4 ½-length victory over Miss Valentine.
Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, the Mike Hushion-trained filly covered the seven furlongs in a comfortable 1:24.17 as she scored her second straight stakes win, adding the Bouwerie to her June 3 victory in the Wandering Cloud overnight stakes.
Now 5-0-2 from seven starts, the daughter of Dixie Union earned $60,000 and lifted her bankroll to $199,800 for H. Lewis Rapaport and Sugar Maple Farm.
Miss Valentine, the second choice in the field of five, was a half-length clear of Hot Danger, with Superior Sally and There Goes Molly completing the order of finish. Life's Measure was scratched.
