Powerful late surge propels Suffused to victory in La Prevoyante

Suffused won the $200,000 La Prevoyante (G3) at Gulfstream Park Saturday with a powerful late surge that put her one length clear of the runner-up and second choice, Arles, who finished one length in front of third-place finisher, Try Your Luck.

Ridden by Jose Ortiz, Suffused is a homebred for Juddmonte Farms and is trained by Bill Mott. Ortiz gave the 5-year-old daughter of Champs Elysees a heady and patient ride that allowed her to save her best for the stretch, where she unleashed a strong turn of foot.

The final time for the 1 1/2 miles on the turf was 2:26.04. The  winner, who was the 3-2 favorite in the 12-horse field of older fillies and mares, returned $5 for a $2 win bet.

The winner, who broke from Post 12, survived a claim of foul from Joel Rosario, the rider of the runner-up, for interference in deep stretch.

The La Prevoyante was Suffused’s third stakes win since coming to the United States from Great Britain following her 2015 campaign.

Trainer Bill Mott (Suffused): “A little wide on the first turn, but other than that, no problem. The post position—if you scratch, where are you going to run? He was able to get into the two path after the first turn. It looked like she had them whenever she wanted them. (Inquiry?) I wasn’t worried initially because I thought it was against the 3 (Try Your Luck), but Jose (Ortiz) said she came in a little when she switched leads. Horses always come in half a path; that is just the nature of the beast.”

“I think there’s a race at the end of the meet ($200,000 Orchid April 1) we might have a look at. She’ll keep running. She just got good towards the end of last year. I guess it’s just maturity.”

Jockey Jose Ortiz (Suffused): “She broke good. They went wide into the first turn. When we got to the quarter pole she got into a really good position, and from there she changed her leads well in the stretch and finished up strong.”
