Ridden for the first time Victor Espinoza, Powder, a 3-year-old California-bred filly by Slew’s Tiznow, notched her third consecutive victory by taking Friday’s $51,000 Santa Anita allowance feature in virtual gate to wire fashion by 1 ¼ lengths. Owned by Seltzer Thoroughbreds and trained by Ian Kruljac, she got six furlongs in 1:10.56.
“She was a bit uncoordinated when she came in, but she’s grown into herself,” said Kruljac. “She’s getting confident out there on the lead now.”
Well beaten in her debut here on April 30, Powder was dropped into a maiden $30,000 claimer on May 21 and responded with a sharp second place finish. A subsequent maiden special weight winner versus state-breds on Aug. 19, she then drilled a starter allowance field going 5 ½ furlongs on Sept. 14 by 3 ¼ lengths.
Off at 4-1 today in a field of 10 fillies and mares three and up bred or sired in California, she paid $10.20, $4.00 and $4.40.
With three wins and a second from five starts, she picked up $30,600 for her win today, boosting her earnings to $91,305.
Trained by Jeff Mullins, Dreamy Gal, idle since Aug. 20, got the services of Tyler Baze, who had been aboard the winner in all of her four previous starts. Off as the 5-2 post time favorite, Dreamy Gal pressed the pace and finished second, 3 ¼ lengths in front of Red Stich and paid $3.40 and $3.80.
Ridden by Israel Ocampo, Red Stich was off at 11-1 and paid $6.00 to show.
Fractions on the race were 22.28, 45.74 and 58.09.
