Poll results: Is Breeders' Cup doing enough with Baffert?

The results of Horse Racing Nation’s Monday Twitter poll as to whether the extra testing of Bob Baffert-trained horses by the Breeder’s Cup was the correct move showed a divide among voters.

The winning option in the poll, with 38.1 percent of the 1,016 votes, was “too little too late,” but that choice did not win the absolute majority of public opinion.

Sitting at 36.1 percent of the vote, was “it was the right move,” indicating support for the Breeders’ Cup letting Baffert run on Nov. 5 and 6 at Del Mar, though under increased scrutiny.

Baffert will have to submit to “undergo enhanced out-of-competition, pre- and post-race testing and other security protocols,” which he will have to pay for, in order to participate in the Breeders’ Cup.

Beside the 5.6 percent who said they were not sure how appropriate the punishment was, the smallest group of voters was the 20.2 percent who said “it’s a case of piling on” to indicate either Baffert deserved no further punishment or that he was being singled out unnecessarily.

Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup races will be taken Monday and announced next Wednesday.
