Pinehurst came as the 4-1 third choice to win Monday’s Del Mar Futurity (G1), going seven furlongs for trainer Bob Baffert under Mike Smith.

Pinehurst did not get to the lead immediately out of the gate, but did not waste much time in doing so, coming up the rail to get to the front. From there, he held on, widening the lead down the stretch.

Fractions for the race were 22.09, 44.77 and 1:10.17. Pinehurst’s winning time was 1:23.55.

The 2-year-old Twirling Candy colt paid $10 for the win. Finneus finished second and American Xperiment completed the trifecta.
