The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association provided an updated of the redevelopment project at Pimlico, which is expected to be completed in time for next year's Preakness Stakes in May.

Construction on steel and masonry for the backstretch barns began last month, according to construction manager Clark Construction, and roofing of the barns with PVC fabric is happening this month.

The project includes demolition of the grandstands, clubhouse, and equine structures, with a focus on salvaging historical elements. The upgraded facility will feature a new clubhouse, paddock, racing barns, maintenance facilities, utility upgrades, sitework and landscaping.

The Preakness is being held at Laurel Park this year. The overall plan calls for Laurel Park to be redeveloped into a training center after the Pimlico project is completed. But that plan hit a snag last week when a state legislature committee imposed 45-day delay while it reviews the $48.5 million deal for the Maryland Stadium Authority to buy Laurel Park.
