Pimlico play of the day: 1st-timer has star power in race 5

The $20,000 maiden claimer for males sprinting on turf attracted an overflow field Sunday at Pimlico. Great Artist will have to beat experienced foes, but the Horse Racing Nation First-Time Power Ratings indicate he is up to the task in the fifth race that starts at 2:23 p.m. EDT.

Great Artist comes from the barn of trainer Phillip Capuano, a 24% conditioner with his first-time starters. The Great Notion gelding has been working forward since March 1, and his most recent drill was a noticeable uptick in speed from previous workouts.

As for the others in this race, none has run par for the level per Brisnet's Speed Ratings, so if Capuano has assessed his charge's talent correctly, then he definitely fits among these rivals.

Horse Racing Nation's First-Time Power Ratings assess every debut runner's chances on a 1-5 scale. Four- and five-star horses typically out perform their odds, while one-star horses are total throw-outs.

Horse Racing Nation coverage of the Pimlico spring meet is made possible through a marketing co-operative with the Maryland Jockey Club.
