Photo Call Holds Off Cushion in Violet
Cooper’s Photo Call moved to the lead around the far turn and held off a late charge by Cushion to post a nearly one length score in the $100,000, Grade 3 Violet Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday afternoon.
Trained by H. Graham Motion, Photo Call stepped the mile and an eighth over firm turf in 1:47 4/5 and paid $6, $3.40 and $2.20. Cushion completed the $22.20 exacta and paid $3.80 and $2.40. It was another two and a quarter lengths back to Granny Mc’s Kitten, who paid $2.20 to show as the favorite in the field of five fillies and mares.
“The plan was to keep her covered up and relaxed as long as possible and that’s what I was able to do,” said winning jockey Trevor McCarthy. “Around the far turn, I had to swing her out and she really ran on after that.”
An Irish-bred filly by Galileo from the Rock of Gibraltar mare Theann, the 4-year-old Photo Call has won three of her 12 outings.
On Saturday, no lone ticket had all six winners in Monmouth Park’s Jersey Shore 6, creating a carryover of $96,789.62 for this Sunday’s card.
The Jersey Shore 6, which is offered daily on Monmouth’s final six races, is a 20-cent wager with a takeout rate of 20%.
On Saturday, all six winners paid $2,928.48 to multiple winners.
