Peter Pan runner-up Caracaro points to Saratoga's Travers
Global Thoroughbred and Top Racing's Caracaro followed up his Jan. 11 maiden win at Gulfstream Park with a strong second in Thursday's Grade 3 Peter Pan, earning 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points.
Assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. said Caracaro is under consideration for the 151st renewal of the $1 million Travers (G1) on Aug. 8, which offers 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top-four finishers.
"We definitely want to try and get more points and qualify for the Derby. That's our main goal," said Delgado Jr, assistant to his father. "He had a huge effort off a six-month layoff going a mile and an eighth. So far he's come out of the race really well."
Delgado, Jr. said a start in the Travers is likely if Caracaro continues to move forward.
"We had a conversation with the owners about it and we want to give him the next 10 days and let him tell us if he's on the right path for the Travers," Delgado Jr. said. "He's already here and if he can move forward from that effort, we think he can improve enough to belong in the race."
