In her second stateside start, English-bred Pellucid served ample notice she could be a force to be reckoned with in future turf stakes with a dominating gate to wire allowance win at Santa Anita under Flavien Prat. Trained by Simon Callaghan, she negotiated 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12.71.
“She’s super talented,” said Callaghan, who sent her out to an eventful fourth place finish over the course in her U.S. debut on April 2. “She’s a bit headstrong, but we’re working with her to relax. Flavien worked her a couple times before this race, so that helped.”
Callaghan indicated Pellucid would be pointed to a turf stakes at Santa Anita “either down the hill or at a mile,” next time out.
A 3-year-old filly who ran four times in England, with a Group III placing to her credit in her second start on Sept. 1, Pellucid was off at 2-5 in a field of seven fillies and mares three and up and paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10.
Owned by Michael Tabor, Pellucid bagged $33,600 for the win, increasing her earnings to $53,890.Her overall mark now stands at 6-2-0-1.
With Gary Stevens aboard, Grand Prix tracked the winer throughout and was clearly second best, finishing 4 lengths in front of Lynne’s Legacy. Off at 6-1, Grand Prix paid $3.80 and $3.20.
Off at 19-1 with Stewart Elliott up, Lynne’s Legacy rallied from last and paid $4.20 to show.
