Valenzuela Likely to Return Sunday

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela is off his mounts today, but is “80%’’ to ride Sunday, according to agent Tom Knust, after being involved in a mishap in Friday night’s fourth race.

Sunburn, the 2-1 favorite in the race for California bred maiden fillies and mares, stumbled badly shortly after the start, unseating Valenzuela. The rider, who earned his first Grade I win at Hollywood Park in seven years July 2 aboard Courageous Cat, was taken immediately to nearby Centinela Hospital Medical Center complaining of hip, leg and left shoulder pain.

X-rays were negative and Valenzuela, who has 21 victories at the Spring/Summer meet, was released from the hospital late Friday.

Valenzuela was named to ride in four of the 10 races today. He has three mounts Sunday.
