After Del Mar went the entirety of its summer meet without a racing-related equine fatality, three horses competing on the Sunday card at Del Mar were vanned off the track after sustaining injuries. Two of those horses, Ghost Street and Prayer Warrior, were later euthanized.

The day’s troubles began in the second race when Princess Dorian, after pressing the pace in an $8,000 claiming race on the main track, took a bad step entering the top of the stretch and was pulled up by jockey Abel Cedillo. Del Mar later tweeted the 5-year-old mare suffered a left front leg injury and was undergoing further care at San Luis Rey Downs.

Later, in a much-needed bit of good news, connections revealed Princess Dorian will undergo surgery and is expected to survive.

Some 30 minutes later in the third race, a maiden event on the turf course, Ghost Street stalked the pace for six furlongs before being pulled up entering the stretch under Martin Garcia. Del Mar later reported the 3-year-old gelding suffered a catastrophic injury to his left front sesamoid and was euthanized.

Then in the sixth race on the main track, Prayer Warrior prompted the pace through the opening quarter mile before being pulled up on the first turn by jockey Tyler Baze. While no further details on the injury were provided, It was later confirmed by Del Mar and those associated with the horse that Prayer Warrior was euthanized.
