Paco Lopez rides five winners Friday at Monmouth
Monmouth’s perennial riding champion Paco Lopez capped a five-win day by getting heavily-favored Madame Mischief to surge late for a three-quarters length victory in Friday’s featured $50,000 allowance at the Jersey Shore track.
With longshot Don’t Listen taking the field of eight fillies and mares 3 and up through snappy early fractions of 22.37, 45.88 and 1:11.10 through six furlongs of the mile and a sixteenth grass race, Lopez was content to sit on the rail with Madame Mischief in fourth.
Don’t Listen stooped coming out of the final turn, with Lopez swinging Madame Mischief outside for the stretch run, eventually collaring the Chad Brown-trained Competitive Market late. It was another two lengths back to Chantilly Road in third.
The winning time over a turf course listed as firm was 1:42.10. Madame Mischief, trained by Jorge Delgado, returned $3.80 to win.
Lopez finished Friday's card with 30 wins on the season, 11 clear of second-place Samuel Marin. He is well on his way to a 12th Monmouth riding title, which would leave him one shy of Joe Bravo’s track record.
Racing resumes Saturday at Monmouth with a first-race post time of 12:50 p.m. EDT.
