Pacific Heat, who has won her two starts by a combined 18 ¾ lengths, will stretch out and step up in class in the Grade I, $300,000-guaranteed Starlet Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Restricted to 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles, the Starlet is the eighth of nine races and will be immediately preceded by the $100,000 King Glorious, a one-mile event for 2-year-olds bred or sired in California.
Post time Saturday is 12:30 p.m. Approximate post for the Starlet is 4 p.m while the King Glorious is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The seventh day of the Winter meet also includes a Los Alamitos cap giveaway – one per paid admission while supplies last.
Trained by Peter Eurton for owners Sharon Alesia, Mike Burns, Taylor Legan and Ciaglia Racing LLC, Pacific Heat is being supplemented to the Starlet for $7,500 – with an additional $7,500 required to start.
Purchased for $175,000 at the Barretts October sale last year, the Unusual Heat filly debuted at Los Alamitos Sept. 25, humbling five rivals by 13 ½ lengths.
Stretched from 5 ½ furlongs to seven-eights of a mile five weeks later, Pacific Heat, who is out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Hotlantic, rolled to a 5 ¼ length victory as the 7-5 favorite in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar. She’s earned $140,000.
Hall of Fame trainers Bob Baffert and Jerry Hollendorfer, who combined to win the Starlet five times when it was run as the Hollywood Starlet (1981-2013) at Hollywood Park, will each have two representatives Saturday.
Baffert, whose most recent win in the Starlet came two years ago with Streaming, entered Pretty N Cool and Treasuring, while Hollendorfer, who has scored previously with Blind Luck (2009) and Killer Graces (2011), entered Stays in Vegas and Surfside Tiara.
Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Pretty N Cool is a double Grade II winner, taking the Sorrento Aug. 12 at Del Mar prior to capturing the Matron Oct. 18 at Belmont Park.
A gray daughter of Scat Daddy and the Rockport Harbor mare Stayclasssysandiego, Pretty N Cool is 3-for-5 with earnings of $344,000. She trailed at 3-5 in her most recent start in the Desi Arnaz Nov. 15 at Del Mar.
